The classic safari is what most people picture and it is still the best introduction: morning and afternoon game drives from a lodge or camp, with a guide who knows the ground and can read what the animals are doing.

What separates a good classic safari from a poor one is pacing. Enough time in one place to sit with a sighting, a full day out where the route allows it, and drives timed to the light rather than to a schedule.
