The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are the same ecosystem with an international border through the middle of it. Wildlife moves across that line all year. So the question is rarely which country has better animals — it is which country's practicalities suit your trip.

Kenya is easier to reach and quicker to start

Nairobi has more international flight options than Kilimanjaro or Arusha, and the Maasai Mara is a road trip from the city rather than a connecting flight. That matters most on short trips: a worthwhile Kenyan safari fits into three days, where a Tanzanian one really wants five.

Kenya also packs more variety into short distances. Within a week you can cover open grassland in the Mara, an alkaline lake at Nakuru, fresh water at Naivasha and semi-arid plains at Amboseli, without any single drive dominating the trip.

Tanzania is bigger, wilder and less crowded

The Serengeti is roughly ten times the size of the Maasai Mara. That scale is the point: you can drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle, which is rarely true in the Mara during peak season.

The Ngorongoro Crater has no equivalent anywhere. An intact caldera holding a resident population that includes black rhino means a single day there can produce more than three days elsewhere. Tanzania also has better lodge depth at the top end.

What about the migration?

Both countries have it, at different times. Calving happens on the southern Serengeti plains around February. The herds move north through the middle of the year and the Mara river crossings people picture are usually between July and October.

If your dates are fixed and fall between July and October, Kenya has the edge. If you can travel in February, the Serengeti calving season is the stronger wildlife experience and far fewer people go for it.

The short answer

  • Three to four days available: Kenya, almost always.
  • Five to seven days, first safari: either, but Kenya is simpler to organise.
  • Second safari, or photography-led: Tanzania's northern circuit.
  • Nine days or more: do both, on a cross-border route.
