What it means

Circuits through the conservancies and fenced parks where rhino conservation actually happens.

Rhino are not evenly distributed. In Kenya they are concentrated where there is fencing, funding and round-the-clock protection, which means Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta and a handful of private conservancies.

Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population, protects the last two northern white rhinos, and runs a sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from outside Kenya. Lake Nakuru is fenced and compact, which is why both rhino species are reliably seen there.

These routes are also where you see conservation as work rather than as a story: monitoring vehicles, tracking teams, and habitat managed alongside livestock.
